In Psychotherapy of Character, Dr. Berezin presents a much-needed alternative to the prevailing doctrine, one that is grounded in an understanding of human nature. Suffering is not a brain problem, it is a human problem. He illuminates the practice and effectiveness of psychotherapy through the story of his patient, Eddie.
Eddie's complicated inner life, varied experiences, and ultimate breakthrough, stand in contrast to the destructive and false promises of a magical cure.
He introduces a new and inclusive paradigm of consciousness for the twenty-first century. On the surface, he lived a successful college life. Eddie was due to graduate with honors, and was accepted into a prestigious PhD program in biology. All the while, he felt alone and dead inside. No one really knew him. The fourth and final chapter focuses on self-conscious reality-testing and on visuo-spatial self-conceptualization, and presents evidence that such manifestations of self-awareness evolve only in those warm-blooded animals whose rule-developing youth lasts two years or longer-that is, those mammals and birds whose survival during the imaginal testing of rules is subjected to prolonged risk if self-consciousness that one is imaging sensations rather than perceiving sensations is absent.

Science tells us we are machines, and looking through this lens our freedom is an illusion. In science there is no place for the spirit. We are sure that there is something real to our inner world. But ordinary science cannot reveal to us the nature of consciousness.
This is because science can only tell us of the laws of objects which are expressed in language. But Consciousness is not an object. Consciousness is the perceiving subject. It can show that the brain is like a machine but it cannot create a machine that is like the brain. We face paradoxes; science has reached its limits.
A great classic of the Trika Tantric tradition4, it speaks to the mystery of consciousness in a manner that is consistent with the Vedas. The universal and the individual Our phenomenal knowledge can only be in terms of the associations of the outer world. But the associations in themselves need something to bind them together. It is the binding that makes it possible to understand words or symbols when they are strung together.
Since the mind is able to comprehend the whole, that is the sentence or larger expressions, the phonemes themselves cannot be used for comprehension. In truth, there is only one bird; the other is just the image of the first as reflected in the fruit!
Although we cannot explain consciousness using science, we can intuitively grasp it. To obtain knowledge, one must remove these coverings of the mind. Sometimes, some light streams in spontaneously through a crack into the mind, and that can be a life-changing epiphany.
This sequence is represented in terms of conceptual schema or sacred images.
