The characters have a beautiful depth to them, and the acting only reinforces it. They feel like individuals, people living their lives, instead of just "plot objects," and this is one of the things I find most fascinating about this work. Can't recommend enough! Reviewer: Hollywood Skyline - favorite favorite favorite favorite favorite - May 25, Subject: Terrific piece of movie making I thought the directing, acting, the cinematography, and even the score were all excellent.
The plot was really great. Did anyone win any Oscar's for their work In "The Stranger. Reviewer: VincentVFC - favorite favorite favorite favorite favorite - March 9, Subject: Rad Man- the acting, the tension, the interesting dynamic between a couple towards the end- This was so good! Loretta Young was terrific, never better. Reviewer: Hakuna Muhimu - favorite favorite favorite favorite favorite - April 16, Subject: When movies were movies Wow these people every last one could act, this was one of the best: if not best movie I ever seen.
Robinson was brilliant; Loretta Young was spellbinding; Orson Welles was a crazed madman, and the supporting cast was great in their own right. Only thing missing is some good African in America actors; but it was america as we then knew it. Reviewer: magnoliasouth - favorite favorite favorite favorite favorite - October 1, Subject: Excellent film. I usually prefer pre-war films but this one is an exception to the rule. I am not particularly a Loretta Young fan, either, but she really was something in this.
Ed is always a fine actor in every way. Though his pinnacle was Keys in Double Indemnity, he certainly is enjoyable. Orson Welles is another fine actor that pulls through here as well. All in all, it has an excellent cast and though one reviewer called this a B-movie, which it definitely is not. The budget was over a million dollars and in its day, that wasn't too bad at all.
In fact, this film was an Oscar nominee. Granted, only one and none of the big ones but best writing is nothing to sneeze at.
Either way, this is a great one to watch and this thriller is a slow fun build to its climax. Great to see Welles do so well, with not too much, script-wise. A word for Loretta Youngm too. Loved her in this: www.
